The aim of the project is to renovate the historic building at Mārstaļu iela 6 and adapt it to the needs of the Literature and Music Museum (LMM), making it more accessible to both domestic and foreign visitors.

The unique historical values of the house will be integrated into the museum premises, while the worthless layers and partitions built in recent decades will be dismantled. The facade of the building will be renovated, engineering systems will be rebuilt, an event room with exposed historical structures will be created in the attic that has not been used for a long time, and an lift will be installed in the building, which will allow people with disabilities to visit the museum. The curved stairs, wooden panels, parquet and doors of the house will also be polished, and the historic brick vault will be exhibited in the basement. The small management building in the yard will retain its warehouse function after the restoration. In turn, the courtyard will be a great place for visitors. It is planned to restore the former painting of the artist Helena Hearthstone on the courtyard wall, removing it from the layering.

After the reconstruction, LMM will have approximately 1,400 m2 of space at its disposal for a permanent exposition dedicated to Latvian literature and music, and exhibitions, as well as a landscaped yard for creative events. The content of the exhibition has been created in close cooperation between LMM art experts and writer Nora Ikstena, artist Anna Heinrihsone, creative director Una Rozenbauma, musician Sigvards Kļava.

The house at Mārstaļu iela 6 is a cosy and warm building. Therefore, also thinking about the message of the museum's exposition, it highlights the development stories of personalities in the fields of writing and the music in the context of the everyday side of life, in which there is a place for doubt, helplessness, creative rituals and waiting for inspiration until the light of morning or the darkness of night. By this we mean that the gene for creation is not exclusive, it is in each of us, and everyone can create.

Iveta Ruskule,
Director of the Museum of Literature and Music
